Industrial Roller Shutter Doors

Industrial roller shutter doors consist of interlocking slats that form a continuous hinge along its entire length. This construction allows the curtain (shutter) to roll up or down from a revolving spring loaded shaft barrel mounted onto steel support brackets. A bottom rail or T-Section strengthens the curtain and allows for the fitment of handles and locking devices. The curtain is prevented from moving sideways by channel guides and end locks. The entire assembly is either bolted or welded to the building structure and the rolling mechanism is enclosed in a canopy hood.

Roller shutter doors are widely used in the building industry, from simple applications such as counter closures to heavy duty electrically operated aircraft hanger doors.

Types Of Roller Shutter Doors

There are four alternative types of roller shutter doors that can be selected, as described below. The space requirements tabled serve as a guideline only. Refer to a consultant for more detailed specifications.

Push – Up Doors

Push-up operation is also known as self coiled or hand operation. The weight of the curtain is counter balanced by the self coiling action of the spring loaded barrel. The door is lifted open by using handles fitted to the bottom rail of the T-Section.

This type of operation is suitable for relatively small openings, not exceeding 7m² or approximately 3000m wide x 2500m high.

Note: These space requirements are applicable to all widths within the total m² limitations

Chain Operation | Double Reduction

Chain operation is suitable for roller shutters between 8m² and 30m². these are operated mechanically by and endless chain through a spur reduction gear fitted to the spring loaded barrel.

Electrical Operation

Electric operation is recommended for large doors in frequent operation, although it can be specified for any size door. Various operations include standard push button starter, key switch control, limit switch, remote control, and if required, an electro – magnetic brake. The unit is fitted with an emergency hand operator for use in the event of a power failure. Many additional features can be supplied, for example card readers, inductive loop circuits and automation.

Material

The punched steel range of roller shutters is manufactured from 75mm x 1.0mm thick galvanised steel slats.

The thickness depends on the size of the door. These are either:

  • Punched with holes measuring 2.5mm in diameter x 4mm pitch (See Thru)
  • Punched with elliptical holes measuring 8mm x 3.5mm (Eyeball)
  • Punched with vents measuring 150mm x 35mm and available with polycarbonate inserts as an optional extra (Fenestra)

STANDARD ROLLER SHUTTER COMPONENTS (Optional) CURTAIN / SLATS

This is the steel screen itself, and is an integral part of the roller shutter. Curtains are available in different styles, designs, finishes and thicknesses of material, each described in an individual product data sheet.

GUIDES

These are formed from a channel section and are mounted vertically on either side of the door opening, forming a guide channel in which the curtain rolls up and down. They are usually made of mild steel or aluminium and are available in different thicknesses and depths according to the requirements of the size of the roller shutter door.

BOTTOM RAIL (T-SECTION)

The bottom edge of the curtain is fitted with an mild steel T-Sections.

END LOCKS

Note: End locks are not applicable to grille products.

Nylon or malleable iron end locks are fitted on every alternate slat on either side of the roller shutter curtain. The purpose of it is as follows:

  • To prevent lateral movement of slats, which is a major cause of shutters jamming
  • To insure silent and smooth operation of the roller shutter
  • To prevent having to use grease or any other lubricant in the guides
  • To extend the life of the slats by preventing friction in the guides

GUIDE LOCKS

Guide locks are a popular means of adding to the security of roller shutters for the following reasons:

  • They cannot be violated with bolt cutters
  • They can be installed at a convenient height as opposed to only at floor level
  • Guide locks can be used to add or to replace existing locking systems or ordered as a standard fitting to any roller shutter installation
  • They can be fitted to existing installations

POWDER COATING

The MSD Doors (Pty) Ltd factory is unique in that it has its own in-house state-of-the-art powder coating plant where consistency and quality can be controlled. Roller shutters can be powder coated and finished with exterior/interior quality UV / Non UV resistant polyester / epoxy colours from a wide range or options. The process carries the appropriate guarantees. MSD Doors (Pty) Ltd prides itself on the nine stage pre-treatment plant that accommodates, mild steel and galvanized. All items that are powder coated are first pre-treated with the correct pre-treatment process. Followed by electro static application of powder, followed by oven curing to the correct metal temperature to ensure a quality product is supplied to the end user. The result is an attractive, durable, high-quality finish

NOTE: POWDER COATING DOES NOT APPLY TO NAPOLI AND TRESTINO GRILLERS.

GALVANISING

All exposed roller shutter parts, such as columns, tubing, mild steel T-Sections, guides and end plates, can be hot-dipped in galvanised or electro galvanised on request. This excludes slats and the canopy, which are already mil galvanised items.

MAINTENANCE, SERVICES and REPAIRS

MSD Doors’s after sales service is provided through the head office in Johannesburg, South Africa. For any maintenance, service or repair queries, please consult our website to find your nearest service provider.

END PLATE – (BRACKETS)

End plates are fabricated steel brackets, tailored to suit brick, concrete or steel columns, they support the spring balanced shaft at each end. They also provide the fixing points to support the canopy.

BARREL ASSEMBLY

The barrel assembly consists of Structural steel pipe of sufficient diameter and thickness to carry the load of the curtain. The springs are helically wound (i.e. spiralled) torsion springs of high quality tempered wire of particular diameter and length to provide a perfect counter balance for ease of operation.

CANOPY

A canopy is constructed of 0.8mm (up to 5m long) or 1.0mm (over 5m long) galvanised mild steel in a continuous length up to 6m long. It is formed to fit the contours of the end plates and flanged for rigidity. It is not always necessary to fit a canopy cover.
